The “moving up a level”
Management systems and management structures are tricky at times. They’re even more tricky for people who want to carry out organisations that are as ahierarchical as possible. Yet, people talk about moving up a level.
Moving up a level is most commonly referring to an organisational structure. In that case, moving up a level means moving up in the hierarchy and thus in the managerial systems that are put in place by the organisation. In organisations where there are few or none of those structures, people still need to have some sort of eye for the longer arcs of time or the bigger picture in which the organisation operates.
Those are the people on the level up. Keeping track on the longer arcs. On the structure for the organisation. There doesn’t need to be a hierarchy for that — but someone needs to do it. To see the ways in different parts of the organisation is working. To see improvements and communication issues.
The moving up a level is a perspective that needs to happen in any growing organisation.
