On questions

I’ve realised something about the questions I ask here on Facebook, and about the questions I ask in general.

In order for a question I’m asking to be relevant or interesting to the people I’m asking, it needs to be relevant and interesting to me. And not just the question, the answer as well.

This seems like a pretty easy point to get, but it’s been really hard for me to grasp. People have asked me hundreds of times about the questions, and I’ve answered that I just like crafting questions. That’s partially true, but I’m also ridiculously interested in the answers. In what people think. In how you react to the question being asked. In the sea of conversation that might come out of one single question.

That’s why they need to be relevant and interesting. Because I’ll need to be able to ask follow ups, to challenge answers, to really try to understand the perspectives that are coming out of the answer.

Why do you ask your questions?
